Benchmarks for Developing a Scenario-Based Task
The staff of the Experiential Learning Center work closely with the faculty member on the following steps, acting as staff to the faculty member.
The benchmark products for task development are:
- Scenario description – overview (usually done with the input of an industry colleague).
- Learning outcomes.
- Prerequisites for student success.
- Task overview document and student deliverables. Task description document.
- Industry review and confirmation of learning outcomes, relevance of scenario and authenticity of subtasks. Adjustments made per feedback.
- Task content -- the emails/memos that roll out the assignments within the context of the professional setting.
- Assessment items -- Assessment development involves thinking dynamically about how the learning outcomes are achieved through the tasks and how students demonstrate evidence that those learning outcomes have been achieved.
- Background docs and resources to provide more info within scenario (i.e. a description of the fictitious company or professional organization).
- Student learning resources, websites, tutorials to learn skills to better do the work -- specific to each task.
- Website, modeled on the Experiential Learning Center format for scenario-based tasks.
- Student performance support (orientation, action plan, checklist for deliverables, reflection questions).
- Instructor resources -- Task guide (tips or lesson plan) and solution to problems.
