Attachment(s): Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering Case Studies (doc)

In order to approach a structural collapse problem, it is helpful to gain some insight into different causes for failure. You need to know how buildings respond to stresses in earthquakes, severe weather, etc., as well as the architectural and civil engineering challenges that are raised.

In teams of 2-3, prepare a 5-minute presentation/discussion of one of the engineering case studies that I have attached.  The presentation will be to your colleagues and include:

  • Summary description of the project
  • Engineering challenges/features/considerations/principles
  • Newsworthy note(s) — failure, innovation
  • Lessons learned.

Be prepared for questions from colleagues, including the ethics issues involved.  In preparation, it would be a good idea to have a look at the resources that our R&D assistant posted for you.

After your presentations, please do some civil engineering work on your own using the Earthquake simulation at:

http://tlc.discovery.com/convergence/quakes/interactives/makeaquake.html

You will use this website to discover where and how to create buildings that have better chances of surviving earthquakes. You will keep track of your data in the Excel template provided. You will record your conclusions in Microsoft Word.

Be sure to review the requirements for more direction on this assignment.
